Psychotherapy (General)

Dr. Gail Canavan provides treatment for adolescents and adults with an eclectic range of adjustment and   mental health issues, including depression, panic and anxiety disorders, low self-esteem, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorders, drug and alcohol addiction, post- traumatic stress disorder (P.T.S.D.), eating disorders, and dementia.  Unlike most psychotherapy practices, the evaluation and treatment of relationship challenges and sexual dysfunction are subspecialties of this practice.

Dr. Gail Canavan’s practice is based on a bio-psycho-social model utilizing a flexible integrative approach to the process of psychotherapy.  Insight-oriented, supportive, dialectical, and cognitive-behavioral techniques are all important therapeutic techniques, but developing  a trusting and collaborative relationship is most fundamental  to the therapeutic process. Treatment is based on the unique needs of the client (or family) and the treatment plan is an evidence-based but collaborative effort between the client and therapist.

In addition to individual and couple’s therapy, family or group therapy may be provided.  Adjunct therapies such as Twelve-Step-programs, nutrition, or pain management are utilized as needed.

Medication Management

Although many emotional difficulties can be fully treated with psychotherapy alone, research indicates that the combination of psychotherapy and medication may be the most effective treatment for some conditions. Dr. Canavan works with clients to determine whether medication is appropriate, weighing the risks, benefits, and alternatives to medications.  Primary care or other medical specialists are frequently considered part of the treatment team.
